Mrs. Leach's sixth graders are very excited about a collaborative blogging project with Ms. Haraz's classes in New Jersey. Mrs. Mellott contacted fellow Librarian Mz. Haraz after discovering she was looking for a school to blog with. Mrs. Mellott's blog is entitled What Are You Reading? And Ms. Haraz's blog is entitled Reading Reflections. Mrs. Mellot, Mrs. Leach, sixth grade LEAD classes and Ms. Haraz's classes will be blogging about books they have read and commenting on each others posts. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what their peers are reading in another state and discussing the books. Palmyra students are wondering about the New Jersey students and the beach while the NJ students are wondering about living near Chocolatetown, USA...but we have to discuss the books first.

Book Fair Fever!
This year during Valentine's week the Palmyra Area Middle School library hosted a Scholastic book fair. Students had the opportunity to purchase books, posters and school supplies to support the library. Justin Bieber posters were a hit with the girls but students also showed their love for books with enough purchases for the library to earn over $2,000 in Scholastic dollars. Our Scholastic dollars will be used to purchase new books for the middle school library!
Horton and some other Dr. Seuss characters are on display in the library. The library celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2 with Mrs. Hoover reading her favorite Dr. Seuss book The Cat in the Hat. Mrs. Mellott read The Boy on Fairfield Street about Dr. Seuss's early years. Green Eggs and Ham was read to sixth grade lunch bunch book club and Mrs. Mellott was surprised by how many students could still recite many of the lines, "I do not like them Sam I am."
As part of Unified Arts Day for Eighth grade, author Debra Moffitt will be spending some time here at Palmyra Area Middle School on Friday March 11th. Mrs. Moffitt has written a series for middle school girls entitled The Pink Locker Society. Check out Mrs. Moffitt's website to read the first chapter of Only Girls Allowed and some other cool stuff.

Janurary
Palmyra Middle School library was pleased to host a high school student for a shadowing day, as this student plans on becoming a school librarian. :)
Mrs. Mellott read The Librarian's Night Before Christmas and The Giving Tree in Mrs. Leach's classes. Students wrote on scraps of wrapping paper something that they could give and an inspiring bulletin board was created.
Many new titles were purchased at the Scholastic warehouse sale and have been flying off the shelves.
The Lunch Bunch book club has started meeting on cycle days 2 and 3. Students bring their lunches to the library and discuss the books they are reading. Many students received new books for Christmas as well as a few Kindles. Here is a site using podcasts and web videos to get students excited about reading: www.bookwink.com
The library is continuing the reading promotion Fun Fridays:
January 14th There's snow better time to read: where white or snowmen shirts
January 21st Penguin Day: wear black and white
January 28th Chill out and read: wear scarves and winter hats

November Brrr!
The official Read for the Record count is in; 2,057,513 people were recorded for reading The Snowy Day.
We have a display of Newbery Medal winning books and our own Mrs. Bortner did a Newbery Medal book talk. Mrs Bortner has read most if not all of the Newbery books and gets one every year for her birthday. You can find all of the Newbery books here:
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberymedal.cfm
Students have been writing their favorite books on our library graffiti wall by the circulation desk.
Helen Keller made an appearance in the library for Mr. Deiner's class. Helen loved hot dogs and learned to read in four languages. "No barrier of the senses shuts me out from...my book friends. They talk to me without embarrassment or awkwardness."
To kick-off the Thanksgiving holiday, students were transported back in time to Plimoth Plantation with a read aloud story about the first feast between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag peoples. It's interesting to hear how different people viewed the same event.
Starting this week the library will be promoting reading by sponsoring some Fun Fridays. This week, Prop your feet up and read. Wear holiday socks or toe socks to show your support.

Chilling Out With Some Good Books
It was a rainy day outside but that didn't stop us from having our book talk tables after lunches in cooperation with Palmyra Public Library. This month's theme was Winter Sports and Holidays. Students received bookmarks and signed up to win free books. There are lots of book talks happening in the classrooms and I presented a book talk on the Titanic. After reading biographies, Mrs. Flury's class participated in a speed friending event. I was Helen Keller and found out that I probably would have been friends with both Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy.

Teen Read Week
On October 19th we had a book talk table at lunches where some frightfully great books were featured from the public library and our own middle school library. The public library sponsored a drawing for some free books and passed out some Frankensteintastic bookmarks and stickers. I know the librarians enjoyed interacting with the students and are looking forward to doing another lunch book talk table in November.
If you see any students carving pumpkins and counting the seeds it might be because the featured book for the Read Aloud was How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by G. Brian Karas where Charlie discovers that of the three pumpkins his teacher brings to school the smallest pumpkin has the most seeds; yes "small things can have a lot going on inside them."
We featured thirteen mystery staff readers on the morning announcements. The staff members favorite book was shared along with three clues about them. Posters were displayed in the library and school cafeteria where students could place their guesses. Winners were drawn each day from the correct guesses. The winners could choose a free book or school supplies.
Even though Teen Read Week is officially over we hope everyone will keep on reading!
